Monark Bicycle Serial Numbers
This particular Bates incorporates the bulging “Cantiflex” frame tubing and curvy “Diadrant” fork. These features seem like gimmicks, but were in fact actual improvements.
When you go to this link - you will only need to 1) type in the serial number 2) indicate if the serial number is located at the rear of the bicycle - or towards the top / front. Click on the correct place and the year will be provided. Here's an example, This 24' I purchased has a Western Flyer Badge. The serial numbers on the frame under the crank is K58846. Researching Western Flyer BIcycles I found that there was not just one Company making them through the years.
To be a Schwinn dealer really meant something. Schwinn dealers received training on everything from repair and bike assembly to what parts to stock, suggested store design, service area set-up and selling techniques. Authorized Schwinn bike shops flourished in the fifties and around 500,000 bikes were sold each year from 1950 to 1959.
The tank was fiberglass (far larger than original) with a flashlight embedded in the end. A '1941 J.C.Higgins'(there is no such thing) turned out to be a 1957 with parts mixed from several years and makers. A '1932 Shelby Flyer Whizzer in original paint' turned out to be a 1952 (missing lots of parts) with a 1947 engine (missing lots of parts) with 1970s imported wheels- and a home-grown paint job in colors no Shelby ever knew. Even photos might have confused most observers. But in the absence of an actual inspection, photos are a must. Quick answers without inspection are probably what you want to hear most.but sadly, that's usually all they are. Sunshine guesses.
IF you are going to tell US what you have instead of us telling you, then the point of us assisting you is lost.?When taking photos, leave people and other objects out of the photo and try to shoot against a neutral background such as a wall or garage door.?Take photos of the WHOLE bicycle as well as any detail areas- and be sure to show the chainguard- if any. Load your photos from your digital camera into your computer. If you scan your photos, do them into JPEG/JPG format and send them as attachments.?Do not attempt to bury photos in the actual text of your letter since this may not display properly.or at all.?If you do not have a scanner and you need to scan, use some place like Kinko's Copies (in most areas of North America) and have them do the scans for you.? Avoid gang scans (bunches of photos all crammed into one scan).
And finally, yes, we have a fairly extensive collection of original catalogues, items and information on Hiawatha bicycles too. -NBHAA.com Here is a link to a history site. Click on 'Historical Articles' then click on 'Silver King' to read more. I just saw one in terrific original condition!!
The head tube “before” Jeff, who started collecting balloon-tire bikes decades ago, dug up some great matching wheels and tires from a “donor” bike. Fresh grease for the hubs and some new spokes made them roll and look just right.
Others find the notion nauseating. But it is what it is. Like Gordon Gecko said, corporations are always worth more in break-up value than as corporations. He said he wrecked corporations 'because they are wreckable.' Whichever way you see it, bicycle piranhas are probably here to stay.
Sid won world championship titles on the track while an amateur and as a professional. In 1949 he won the world amateur sprint championship in Copenhagen, and in 1950, the world amateur pursuit championship. In 1952 and ’53 Patterson won the world championship in the pursuit again. By his final year of racing in 1967 he had 12 consecutive Australian championships titles to his name.
Ultimately the brand failed in the 1950s as changing British lifestyles and a changing economy took their toll. 1959 Raleigh Bluestreak bicycle Raleigh bicycles of Nottingham, England designed this bike as a tribute to the British Blue Streak ballistic missile. Armed with Huret derailleurs that managed eight stages of propulsion (gears), the Blue Streak had quite a long range. A Brooks saddle stabilized the trajectory. Cold road warriors aboard this missile were shielded from water attack by the matching Bluemels fenders, and an integrated guidance system (the head lamp) delivered the Blue Streak to its target every time. Late 1950's Frejus road bike Don Hester was one of the most prolific American bike racers in the 1940s. He was the winner of the 1942 “To Hell With The War” unofficial national championship race held at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco.
THIS is why you have so many Pontiac LeMans cars showing up at vintage car auctions with 'GTO' names and parts on them! This is why so many 6-cylinder 1970s Barracudas and Challengers show up at classic car auctions dressed up as 'HEMI-CUDAS' or 'HEMI-CHALLENGERS'. These are customized fakes- regardless of the cute 'resto' names on them. Why can't we just admit–hey, it's a FAKE CUSTOM somebody MADE up? As in it is NOT restored.it is CUSTOMIZED!

In post war Scotland, Rattray’s cycle shop grew under the stewardship of Rattray’s partner Jack Smith to become a focal point and meeting place for cyclists from Scotland and afar, the Scot name representing what was considered to be the best in hand built lightweight racing and touring machines. Andy Hamel Andy Hamel, a well known bike racer and craftsman from Long Island, built this unique bike. The crazy design is based on the 1936 Baines ” Whirlwind”, sometimes called the “Gate”, and made popular more recently by British builder Trevor Jarvis as “The Flying Gate”.
Eddie bought the store, changed the name to Flash Cycles, and proceded to become one of Australia’s greatest cycling boosters. 1952 Fiorelli track bike The great Italian champion Fausto Coppi once rode on a Fiorelli. When Fausto set up the Carpano-Coppi team, he equipped the squad with bikes labeled with his own name, produced by the Fiorelli Brothers (Rinaldo, Mario and Lino). The brothers’ shop was based in the beautiful Piedmontese town of Novi Ligure, which Fiorelli helped turn into an Italian cycling capitol in the ’30′s and ’40′s. The Fiorelli name lasted into the 1990′s, when the brand was purchased by Fratelli Masciaghi manufacturers, primarily for the rights to the Coppi name. Tommy Smeriglios Dick Power You. At the back of the class.
The equipment choices made this a bike for someone with regal tastes. Typical for a British touring bike from the early ’50′s, the frame angles are extremely relaxed.
Rode it until driving the car. Recently, I was able to purchase the exact same model, in original survivor condition, including tires, tubes everything original.
Just prior to, and in the early days of WW 2, companies used up old parts and frames that were lying around in anticipation of wartime regulations, limiting the sales of civilian bicycles. Rather then add their obsolete 1930's frames to the scrap drives, companies like Schwinn put them together and sold them, creating confusion and arguments among bicycle collectors today. Unlike today, where a corporation would think nothing of tossing a ton of bicycle frames in a dumpster, knowing that they could take a tax write-off for much more then the parts were actually worth. When anyone wants to ask here, on the CABE, what their particular bike, or frame is, or what year it is: decent, clear and full photos of the entire bike should be posted.
Begins a very old thread on serial numbers, which are, in reality, a model code, EE, etcetera, followed by a sequence number, usually four or five digits. (I obtained the table from a source believed to be reliable, but I have not checked that table with Monarch). From the sequence number, one can tell within a few weeks of when Monarch's production control department committed to making a particular machine.
A: Without actually seeing a bicycle, no one can tell you precisely how much it is worth or even what it actually is! If they do, they are likely just telling you what they think you want to hear- and everybody likes to hear that they've just bought something for five bucks that is worth a million! Price guides exist, but A.) guides are usually wildly skewed as far as realistic prices and B.) guides very often incorrectly identify years and C.) guides do not take into account varying conditions of a bicycle, nor how much to deduct if various parts are missing. For instance, on some bicycles, the tank or the headlight alone might be worth more than the entire bicycle itself! D.) ANY printed matter regarding pricing of old things ALWAYS has a limited time when it is of any use (IF it was correct in the first place).

Monark Bicycle Serial Numbers
We DON'T GUESS. If you want professional, accurate information, instead of amateur guessing, here is where you get it. But the biggest mistake that people make is they listen to DIY'ers and presume they can diagnose their own serial numbers in a snap. And they are usually wrong. This just is NOT a DIY proposition. It requires a lot of study and at least some expertise. And it is extremely rare that a model number or a serial number was used for one year and one year only.

Oh, yes, the navy used Amplidyne®-based systems, which are like WL-S, but with a very much higher amplification factor. The B-29 (defensive) fire-control systems were all Amplidyne-based. Probably a lot of naval fire-control systems, too.
As machines were completed, perhaps a year or more later, the sequence number was stamped on the machine as its serial number. Plus the model identifier (EE, etcetera). You should find lots of groups of sequence numbers which refer to identical machines. Say, the DoD ordered 100 10EEs, and specified a delivery schedule which was convenient to it.

'Vintar Peequar sez they were only made for 2 months and only in blue'. He knows so because Pozo Seeko told him he saw a Xerox once! But Arkwar Farquar sez.oh no! They also made PINK Rollfast Phantoms on the 4th of July in a snowstorm when the power at the factory went out and they had to use J.C.
Politics and personal conflicts have derailed many Olympic plans over the years, and Ted’s experience in 1948 was no exception. National team coaches dropped Ted from the road race roster after he competed in local pre-Olympic British races against their instructions Ted, primarily a track guy, complained that he merely needed some miles on his road bike to get used to operating a derailleur. Claude Butler drivetrain Ted did end up racing in the 4000 meter team pursuit event, with the U.S. Squad getting 9th place with a best time of 5:22. To give you an idea of how aerodynamics, bicycle technology, training and even the technology involved with modern helmets and clothing has progressed in bike racing over the years, here is a comparison: The U.S.
Charlie, the rider, and Jerry, the shop owner, helped to keep bike racing alive in this country during some otherwise dark decades for the sport. Charlie was the national champion in 1937, and had a professional career that spanned the war and into the late 1940s. Charlie won numerous six-day races, including the Winnepeg Six in 1948 and Cleveland in 1949. After his cycling career had finished, Charlie was one of Raleigh bicycle’s first two traveling sales representatives. His vast sales territory included the entire eastern half of the United States. Butch Neumann is the one with the waterbottle on his handlebars This is Erhard Neumann’s Schwinn Paramount.

We can't possibly teach you everything we know about classic bicycles by a mere web site! Sometimes, you just have to rely on a real human being who has first-hand knowledge- as incredible as that may seem to some Internet users today. We prefer to give you accurate information and that means you can't DIY here. Q: Does NBHAA assist or collaborate with institutions or museums? A: We are happy to assist organizations, museums, institutions. However, direct arrangements are necessary, so be sure to drop us an e-mail as early as possible.
On Monarks, after the close of WW 2,[ at least every one I've seen] this includes the Spiegle Airman and Rockets, the serial number is on a aluminum tag, on the bottom bracket. Here is a photo of two tags I sold to a Cabe member, that I never shipped him and I still have.
A: What makes a vintage bicycle valuable? One word: DEMAND. We like to think that the rare and interesting stuff is the most valuable, but that is often not the case. Sometimes a buyer will pay huge money for something that is.er.SHINY. Makes no difference if it is accurate or not. Makes no difference if somebody made it out of parts of 20 different bicycles from 10 different years and 15 different manufacturers. SHINY counts!

Also the two threaded rods that the springs set on may be longer then the pre-war and early post war.
I used to race my single speed schwinn heavyweight against bicycles with gears and never got beat. This Monark however is the smoothest and fastest heavy weight i have ever ridden. Does anyone know of a club for Monark enthusiasts. I am also interested in Chome or aluminum framed bikes. ANSWER: While we don't know of a specific club for Monark enthusiasts, NBHAA.com has the largest archive of original Monark and Silver King literature and factory records.
This bike was hefty enough to keep you safe in the event of a tornado. The 1955 Schwinn catalogue listed the boy’s Hornet at sixty and one-half pounds, so if a twister was threatening to carry you off to Oz, you simply had to hold tight to your handlebars and everything would be fine. The front end is as wide as the back Take a close look. The brilliance is in the details. Up front we have a custom front hub and fork, built as wide as the rear end of the bike, a design that must have been quite a bit more rigid laterally when ridden on banked velodromes. Next, check out the rear wheel.
In 1952 and ’53 Patterson won the world championship in the pursuit again. By his final year of racing in 1967 he had 12 consecutive Australian championships titles to his name. 1960 Schwinn logo This Paramount was most likely built by Ovie Jensen, the frame builder that Schwinn had in the Paramount division during this era. Unlike most tandems that you see today, this bike was built with the timing chain on the same side as the drive chain. We aren’t exactly sure of the reason for this little touch, but it’s possible that it was merely a bit of track racing superstition (like not having tire labels on the right side of the bike).
My dad took it to a couple of places to try to get it welded but that was around 1952 and the technology in Frederick was not up to the task. I do wonder what happened to that great bike. Sherman ANSWER: Aluminum Silver King bicycles were not welded. The frames were assembled at the factory with a special pressure/wedge/flare technique that MSK called 'mushroom wedging.' Thus any attempt to weld one in the 1950s with technology as it was then would have almost surely meant failure. The best way to repair the frame would simply have been to re-wedge fit the bars back in place under pressure.
This was the race-ready rig for the rider who wanted to keep up with all of the older kids in the neighborhood. It can be difficult to find a good little road bike for kids, even today. In the late ’50′s and early ’60′s kids typically had to choose between small balloon-tire bikes and mid-weight “English Racers”. The kid who originally owned this one was pretty lucky, considering that his bike weighed about half as much as other options and boasted some fine features. Campione Gian Robert Derailleur We aren’t sure which parts were available off the shelf and which of this stuff was custom. Actually, the handlebar stem was obviously custom as it sports a nice Wilier crest.
Alienware mx14 r2 drivers. That’s fast enough to lap the ’48 mens team 4 times on the 250 meter Rio velodrome. Flying Straight Ahead This bike has a Cyclo twin-wire gear changer with a four-speed freewheel. All of the running gear remains the same as ordered in 1949. The Stoker’s and Captain’s handlebars slide on beautifully constructed and chromed stems.
Cees Beers did some amazing things with his ADA wheels starting in the mid ’90′s, building custom carbon-fiber wheels for clients like Bjarne Riis or Jan Uhlrich. Master builders (and former race circuit pros) like Calvin Jones at Park Tools or Ric Hjertberg from Wheelsmith were the best. But these guys all look lazy compared to George Omelenchuk. George would take materials that were already on the cutting edge of technology, re-work the material and design from scratch, just to squeeze a little more performance out of them for just one rider. 1945 Schwinn New World When you have an American-made bike and name it the “World Traveler” you conjure up images of trips taken abroad. You make people think about exploring the countryside and seeing new things. The “World Traveler” was a great bicycle name to sell Americans in the latter half of the 20th century.
